Deuteronomy 6:6-7:
- And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:
- And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Ephesians 6:4:
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
May the Lord bless the reading and the hearing of His Words in the Name of Jesus – Amen.
The duties of the father in raising Excellent Children!
We live in a Generation and in a Society that Celebrates Success but neglect the Process that Produces it.
Behind every Excellent Child, is usually a father or a father-figure who understands his duties before God.
Excellent Children are not accidental but they are Product(s) of Intentional Godly fatherhood.
For God Himself as the Bible said in Psalm 103:13 says: Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
… So, God Himself is a father.
Now talking about the duties of a father; who is a father?
- A father is more than the Biological Contributor.
He is a Man entrusted with the responsibility of raising, of guiding and of Shaping Child lives.
- And in a deeper sense, a father is a Life Giver.
He is the Source through which a Child comes into the world.
- A father is a Leader.
He Produces direction and set the Course of the family.
- A father is a Teacher.
He trains the Child in Values, he trains them in Character and he trains them in Life’s Principles.
- A father is a Protector.
He guides the Child Physically, he guides the Child Emotionally and he gives the Child Spiritually.
- A father is a Provider.
He works to meet the Needs of his family.
- A father is a Model.
He demonstrates how to live a Godly Life and the Children learn by watching him.
- A father is a Spiritual Guide.
He leads the Child towards what will Shape his/her Faith.
And in one sentence, a father is not a Man who just gives birth to a Child, but the one who takes responsibility of raising up that Child into Purpose and into Maturity.
If we want a Generation of Children who are Spiritually rooted; if we want a Generation of Children who are Morally Upright; if we want a Generation of Children who are Intellectually Sound and if we want a Generation of Children who are Socially Responsible; then fathers must arise and do their responsibilities.
You don’t just have the responsibility to lead the Child into Success in Academics and Career; we need to lead them to God.
The Bible in Psalm 127:3 says: Lo, children are an Heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.
The Child is not your Possession but God’s Assignment.
Therefore, every father has a duty!
Let me mention some of the duties – The D’s (Duties) of the father:
- The first “D” duty of the father is that the father has “The duty of Devotion”.
This includes Spiritual Leadership and Intercession.
Joshua said in Joshua 24:15: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
☆ A father must first be the Priest of his house before you become the Parent.
☆ A father must be a Priest that kneels and makes Sacrifices on behalf of his Children.
In Job 1:5, Job offers sacrifices for his Children continually.
So, the father must be careful of what the Children watches in the Media, what is their Belief Systems and Values and who they spend their time with.
So, father as a Spiritual Leader must lead Family Devotion and must teach the Word of God and Model Life of Prayer.
It is my Prayer that just as God Testified about Abraham and our father-in-the-Lord read that to us during the RCCG April 2026 Holy Communion Service in Genesis 18:19 – He said: For I know him (Referring to Abraham), that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do Justice and Judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Abraham’s Greatness was not in Covenant but in the ability to transmit what God has given to him.
- The second “D” duty of the father is that the father must be Discipline rooted (The duty of Discipline).
He must do this in Love and not in Anger.
In Proverbs 13:24, the Bible says: He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
In Hebrews 12:6, the Bible says: For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Discipline is not Punishment neither is it about Control; it is about Correction.
And we need to Discipline in Love.
A father must set the Boundary, correct the wrong behaviour with Patience, balance firmness with Love and guide a Child towards what is right.
A Gardener prunes the tree not to destroy it but to make it grow.
And like a good father, we must correct with Patience and not with Anger.
Why? Because the Bible says in the Book of James 1:20 that the wrath of a Man does not Produces Righteousness.
When a father corrects from Anger, it confuses the Child, it damages Relationship and it doesn’t Produces True Change.
Absence of Discipline today, Produces regrets tomorrow.
And what you tolerate in your Children today; you may not be able to control it tomorrow.
- The third “D” duty of the father is that the father must have “The duty of Development”.
This is Intentional Training and direction of the Child’s Destiny.
In Proverbs 22:6, the Bible says: Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Training is not Accidental but it is deliberate and must be consistent.
☆ A father must train the Child about Character – Character of Honesty, Humility and Diligence.
☆ A father must train the Child in Values – Value of Respect, Responsibility and Integrity,
Also in Values in Skills, Education, Discipline and Excellent Mindset.
☆ A father must teach the Child Success in serving the Lord more than Success in the world.
- The fourth “D” duty of the father is that the father must have “The duty of Demonstration”.
A father is the Bible that the Child will read first.
Our Action in Modelling Excellent Children makes us more than we can ever know and not what we say.
A father is a Living Example of Christ.
And one of the Greatest Truth that we found in the Scriptures is found in 1 Corinthians 11:1 – Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
And a father must reflect the Character of Christ because what you say is not as important as what you do.
Teaching is not only Verbal, it is Visible.
- The fifth “D” duty of the father is that the father must have “The duty of Delight”.
As a father, you must be Emotionally Present.
Colossians 3:21, the Bible says: Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.
Excellence is not Produced in the atmosphere of Fear, atmosphere of Neglect or atmosphere of Distance.
Children must be affirmed.
The reality is that what they hear constantly, they become.
Even Jesus Christ before He Performed the first Miracle; God has to affirm Him.
In Matthew 3:17, the tells that: And lo a voice from Heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
If Jesus Christ needed Affirmation, your Children also need it.
Let me cap it up:
The Final Charge is this – There are 5-D’s (Duties) of Excellent fatherhood:
- Devotion – Leading Spiritually in the House.
You need to be Spiritual and Pray consistently.
- Discipline – Correct in Love and Wisdom.
- Development – Train and guide their Destinies.
- Demonstration – Let your Life model what you want them to be.
- Delight – You need to love them and you need to say it and you need to amplify it.
My Prayer is that God of Heaven will make us a Good father in the Name of Jesus – Amen.
But before anybody can become a Good father, you need to meet with the Father – Our Father in Heaven because He is the Greatest Father.
As my father-in-the-Lord will come to the Podium; if you are a father who is yet to meet this Father in Heaven; then you need to meet Him.
May I say this: “Don’t carry the burden that doesn’t belongs to you”.
You don’t own the Children; it is God that owns them. So direct them to where they belong (DMC NOTES: Psalm 127:3)
My Prayer is that God will help us to become what He has Destined us to become – Amen.
Let us Pray together!
